The Swan Lace

Code: NGC 6992, NGC 6995
Type: Nebula
Constellation: Cygnus
Distance from the Sun: 3,000 light-years

The Cygnus Lace Nebula is the remnants of a supernova whose explosion is believed to have occurred nearly 10,000 years ago. This vast, expanding cloud of gas stretches across a region of the sky 36 times larger than the full Moon, revealing a delicate interlacing of colorful filaments in telescopes.

Fun fact: The shock wave from the explosion is still expanding through space at over 170 km per second—a lace woven at astronomical speed!
