The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101)
Code: M101, NGC 5457
Type: Spiral galaxy
Constellation: Ursa Major
Distance from the Sun: 17.4 million ly
M101 is one of the largest spiral galaxies visible from Earth. Its immense disk reveals a complex mosaic of spiral arms, nebulae, and star-forming regions.
Fun fact: M101 is full of H II regions, immense clouds of hydrogen where stars are born. These regions appear pink in images, surrounded by young blue stars, signs of intense star formation activity.
